TxDOT begins construction on new sidewalk in downtown Temple

Crews are working to build a sidewalk on a part of Central Avenue. Drivers can expect some delays.

TEMPLE, Texas — The Texas Department of Transportation started building a new sidewalk in downtown Temple on Jan. 2.

Crews are working along Central Avenue from S. 6th Street to S. 12th Street. The project spans nearly a quarter of a mile long.

"The goals of this project are the improvements that are coming with it and to enhance the safety of that corridor," said Jacob Smith, of TXDOT's Waco District.

The City of Temple said the sidewalk will also help connect East Temple to downtown.

"It will be improving the pedestrian mobility, continuous sidewalks, curb ramps - allowing that enhanced mobility for pedestrian concerns," said Smith.

The City played a role by helping design the sidewalk. The project is being funded by TxDOT, according to City officials, and is estimated to cost just under $250,000.

The project is expected to be completed during the summer of 2025.

"We encourage people to look at our social media and be on the lookout for any updates," explained Smith.
