Holland ISD holiday gesture reminds its students to 'be thankful' this time of year

As Thanksgiving approaches, Holland ISD proves that sometimes, appreciation is best served one slice at a time.

HOLLAND, Texas — In a display of gratitude, Holland Independent School District's Parent-Teacher Organization (PTO) delivered a special pre-Thanksgiving surprise to its educators and staff: fresh-baked pies for every employee.

More than 130 district employees, including teachers, maintenance staff, cafeteria workers, and administrators, received pies as part of the PTO's initiative to show appreciation for their dedication to students.

"They're the lifeline of what we do around here," said Superintendent Shane Downing. "Our PTO supports us in many different ways, and they help improve the day and season."

The initiative wasn't just about treating staff - it was designed to teach students valuable lessons about gratitude. Students helped distribute the pies, creating meaningful moments of connection between them and their educators.

Fifth-grade teacher Ashley Wendler says these gestures of appreciation remind educators why they chose their profession.

"We have such a great community, and our kids are why we do our job," Wendler said. "That's why we get here and come in the mornings and do all of our hard work - just to see their smiles and make them connect to what we're teaching them."

The project brought together various parts of the community. Local baker First Bite from Jarrell prepared four varieties of pies, working through the early morning hours to ensure fresh delivery. Card My Yard of Salado contributed decorative yard signs to enhance the celebration.

PTO member Jocelyn Zajicek believes the initiative serves a dual purpose.

"We get our kids and students involved in this just so they can show that appreciation to all the employees here," she explained. "I think it teaches our kids to take a step back, be thankful, and be grateful for what an amazing school district we have here in Holland."

In this community, the gesture represents more than just a holiday treat - a testament to the strong bonds between educators, students, and families.

For the district's 75 teachers and 55 support staff members, it's a sweet reminder that their hard work doesn't go unnoticed. The PTO's gesture helps develop the positive atmosphere that makes Holland ISD special.

"These are the kinds of traditions that strengthen our community," Downing added. "They provide support for our teachers routinely throughout the year."
