Central Texas group feeds hundreds of truck drivers in Abbott

Central Texans Helping Others has fed over 400 truckers in just three days and will continue to feed more over the next few weekends.

ABBOTT, Texas — A local group, Central Texans Helping Others, decided they wanted to give back to those that are helping keep grocery store shelves stocked.

Sandy Shofner, a Hewitt resident, got a group of five friends together and they filled their camper with meals, snacks and water and headed up I-35 to exit 362A in Abbott.

"We are at exit 362A northbound on Friday's and southbound on Saturdays," Shofner said.

This is their second weekend handing out meals, and they will continue to do so over the course of a total of five weekends.

"These people are our life lines right now," Shofner said. "They are the ones bringing PPE up and down the roads and the food for the grocery stores so we wanted to just help them out."

With the help of both monetary donations from local companies and food donations from Kelly's BBQ in Waco and Rudy's BBQ they have been able to feed over 400 truckers already.

Drivers who stop to grab a snack at the rest area said they haven't been able to eat a full meal in a long time because of how expensive it is.

"I normally eat a can of sardines," truck driver Carl Howard said. "I asked him how much this cost and he said it was free; I am so thankful."

They will continue to do this on Fridays and Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. (or until they run out of food) for the next three weeks.
