Buckholts ISD principal, athletic director among five employees to be suddenly let go

Two years after the district went from an F to an A rating, the school board voted Monday not to renew the contracts of the principal and four other employees.

BUCKHOLTS, Texas — Five employees of the Buckholts Independent School District, including the principal and athletic director, were told this week their contracts would not be renewed, according to multiple sources who did not want to be identified.

The school board voted to approve the non-renewals on Monday.

The employees include Principal Kris Shaver, Athletic Director James Shelton, and two teachers, Kimera Turrubiarte and Maggie Murphy, according to the sources.

Shaver is still listed as the principal on the district's website. According to her bio, this was her first year in the position but a district employee tells 6 News Shaver has been there for five years.

Shelton is also still listed as the athletic director but there is no bio or picture.

Buckholts' accountability rating by the Texas Education Association went from an F in 2017 to an A in 2019.

The superintendent at the time, Nancy Sandlin, said she credited the district's success to the students, teachers and Education Service Center.

The district's website still lists Sandlin as the superintendent but according to sources, Maxie Morgan has taken over that role.

6 News reached out to Morgan multiple times Thursday and Friday. We had not heard back as of this writing.
