WACO, Texas — The annual Homestead Fair, a celebration of traditional crafts and sustainable living, has become a cherished alternative to the typical post-Thanksgiving activities. Visitors immerse themselves in a world where modern families connect with time-honored skills and practices.
"It's just very family-friendly, and people of all ages can enjoy it," shared the Beamer family, who brings their family to the event each year. "We love all the hands-on activities for the kids, and the food is excellent."
The Johnson Family Farm's poultry exhibit has become a crowd favorite among the fair's nearly two dozen interactive demonstrations. Children gather around pens of newly hatched chicks to learn about where their food comes from.
"This is the stuff of life," explained Cody Johnson of Johnson Family Farm. "It teaches them to be gentle with another living creature." The farm offers locally hatched chicks for sale and takes pre-orders for spring poultry, which will be available at the Heritage Market starting in mid-March.
The fair extends its educational philosophy for families, where concepts spring to life through practical demonstrations and hands-on experiences.
While the educational aspects draw many visitors, the fair's culinary offerings – notably its famous apple cider donuts.
"Apple cider donuts are the first thing we do," said the Beamers. "It's like a beeline. After we park, we get the donuts, and we'll figure the rest out."
The fair's appeal extends beyond traditional crafts and farming demonstrations. Daily performances by children's and adult choirs and orchestras provide a backdrop, while seminars on sustainable living and challenging cultural topics engage visitors in deeper discussions.
Artisans showcase their work throughout the grounds, offering handcrafted gifts and home furnishings that bridge the gap between traditional craftsmanship and contemporary living.
"We come out every year after Thanksgiving," said the Beamers. "It's just a nice break from the normal business and Black Friday shopping. It's just a nice family time, good food, good hangs."
