Special Olympics Texas goes virtual

For athletes with Special Olympics Texas, this time away from doing what they love is especially tough

TEXAS, USA — For athletes with Special Olympics Texas, this time away from doing what they love is especially tough. However, they're still finding a way to stay connected.

Bruce Clarke has been a member of Special Olympics Texas for more than one year and active with Special Olympics as a whole for more than 6 years.

"I wasn't really outgoing before I joined Special Olympics and I just feel like it's allowed me to share my story and voice a little bit more," Athlete Leader Bruce Clarke said.

This is why the postponement of their summer games to July is so disheartening.

"Special Olympics is their only type of social activity in a way so that kind of messes up their whole life really. I get bored so I try to go on walks," Clarke said.

The organization provides thousands of people with disabilities a chance to make friends and build leadership skills, But with COVID-19 in mind, Special Olympics Texas CEO Tim Martin said precautions had to be taken.

"It's about safety. That was one of the most difficult decisions we had to make, but working with our population we have so many individuals that are dealing with compromised health conditions," Special Olympics Texas CEO Tim Martin said.

To help out, they've created a virtual space for the time being where athletes can continue to stay fit, connected and involved.

Martin said he hopes it keeps everyone’s spirits lifted.

"Our athletes have the ability to change the human spirit and really brighten the day of so many others. They truly are the exemplification of how to overcome challenges," Martin said.
