WEST, Texas — The West explosion happened on April 17, 2013, seven years ago. The Sunday that followed the explosion, members of the First Baptist Church of West were not able to get into the church for Sunday service, so they decided to meet outside in a field on the other side of town.

The tradition to meet in that field the Sunday after April 17 continued every year and the church doesn't want this year's circumstances to stop them. So, on Sunday the church will meet in the field on the south end of Reagan St., across from Aderhold Funeral Home for a “Drive-In” worship service at 10:15 a.m.

As people drive into the field they will see a sign that will tell them which radiofrequency the church will be using. Attendees can turn on their FM radio, tune to the right frequency, and hear the worship service within their own vehicles.

The church said it is very important that everyone is kept safe so they have established three rules for the day:

  1. Everyone should stay in their vehicle the entire time.
  2. No one should carpool or offer to bring a friend to church. Everyone needs to stay with the people who are already in their own household.
  3. There will not be portable restrooms this year, so if someone needs to leave, they should not worry about pulling out and leaving early.

The church said that the annual outdoor worship service is very important to them, and is a major part of their story.
