BELTON, Texas — A military spouse is doing her part to combat COVID-19 for families who have been financially burdened by the pandemic.
The Centers for Disease Control recommended that people wear face masks in public for protection against the virus. So, Jancy Payton said it was an opportunity to serve just like her husband does on Fort Hood.
She started making masks about two weeks ago in her home design studio. Payton has been busy sewing masks for those who need one.
"A lot of people are finding it hard to find masks,” Payton said. “And I thought wait a minute, I can sew. I have all these supplies, and that’s when I felt like I can help."
Her goal is to provide face masks to 25 households for free. Payton accepts donations to cover the shipping costs and hopes the money will serve even more families.
"We were able to raise so far $370, so we are able to serve a lot more than 25 households which makes me happy," Payton said.
The masks come in a variety of colors and include a cotton filter. Payton even follows the Department of Defense's guidelines to make them for soldiers on post.
"It was perfect,” Payton said. "It’s the color of the military uniform. It’s perfect material and I thought 'Wow I can even help military families,' and we are doing that as well."
