TEMPLE, Texas — Hundreds of motorcycle riders gathered for the 32nd annual Tri-county Toy Run of Central Texas, a cherished holiday for many Central Texans.
William Wilson Jr. led the pack, donned the red suit, and transformed into Santa Claus for a heartwarming cause. "We have been doing this for 32 years. I've been personally involved in it for 28 years, giving kids the toys to watch the smiles on their faces," Wilson said, stationed beside his Indian Roadmaster motorcycle, which he dubbed "Rudolph."
The impact of this annual event extends far beyond a simple toy delivery. Wilson recalled a particularly moving experience from five years ago. "We had kids that didn't have anything," he explained. "And I got with Santa Claus, and we got the kids—I'm talking nothing. We got the kids' beds, clothing, and toys."
This year's event saw unprecedented coordination between law enforcement agencies across Central Texas. Nine departments, including Temple PD, Belton PD, Nolanville PD, Harker Heights PD, Copperas Cove PD, and others, worked together to ensure the motorcycle convoy's safe passage to Lampasas.
For veteran participants like Matthew Ulman, who has joined the run at least a dozen times, the most rewarding moment comes at the beginning. "To watch that 18-wheeler leave here with a bunch of toys... The group ride's fun and everything; that's what we enjoy, but seeing that 18-wheeler full of toys for the kids leave here is pretty great," he said.
The event has become a regional effort, drawing riders across Central Texas. Many participants, like Matthew, return year after year, driven by the desire to make a difference in children's lives. "If you can help the kids out—anybody who is less fortunate—if you can't come out to do this, there are other ways to help," he said.
For Wilson, who recently took over as the event's official Santa Claus, the toy run represents more than just a day of giving. It's a testament to the power of community and the spirit of the holiday season. His "Rudolph," while admittedly "a little cold coming out this morning," stood ready to lead the parade of riders on their mission of spreading joy.
The annual toy run has helped countless families over its three-decade history, providing toys and essential items to families in need during the holiday season. This year's event is expected to benefit hundreds of children across Central Texas, proving that sometimes, the best holiday magic comes not from a sleigh but from the heart of a caring community.
