NEW YORK — Victoria Murillo has been a nurse for two years. She chose the career because she enjoys helping people and taking care of patients the same way she hopes others would take care of her family. Victoria works at Advent health in Killeen but recently headed east to be on the frontlines in New York City.
"It just feels like it's where I belong right now, helping not just the patients but helping other nurses that are drained as well," Murillo said.
Thursday was her first day on the floor.
"Today my day really just consisted of helping out the other nurses. I know where I worked the specific area had a lot of trach patients and gastrostomy tube patients," Murillo said.
She continued on to say it is more than she would have experienced on a normal basis at her hospital.
"There was actually plenty of nurses there and it was kind of just like all hands on deck," Murillo said. "We help out where they need help. If the nursing assistants needed help we would help them."
When it comes to personal protective equipment, Murillo said the hospital is willing to provide the equipment that they need. She cited examples like, if a mask looks soiled or if a face shield is hanging off from the side.
"I feel like the crisis that we are in right now there’s obviously a shortage, but I do feel like I'm well equipped," Murillo said.
Her message to Central Texas is to keep washing hands, take hand sanitizer over gloves in public, use fabric masks and social distance.
