WACO, Texas — It can be tough to ring in a birthday during quarantine, but a Waco man turned the situation and his big day into a positive way to help others.
Roman Novian's 32 birthday was less about him and more about others.
He spent his day in quarantine to collect one dollar donations from online friends for University High's Make-A-Wish Program.
The program was started more than a decade ago by a beloved late University High soccer coach, Mike Chapman, who passed away earlier this year. It's a cause close to Roman's heart.
"It definitely makes me feel good that my friends and family have answered the call to action. It's a great program and emotional experience and that's what really did it for me, just seeing what the kids ask for and how we can meet some of the basic needs," Novian said.
Days after he made his plea on Facebook, Roman raised more than 3 thousand dollars, which will help grant Christmas wishes for children in need.
Roman said he's glad he could spend his big day celebrating others, especially during these tough times.
"I think in times like these people can kind of empathize more and that really helps with this whole cause," Novian said.
