KILLEEN, Texas — Killeen city leaders and administrators from the Killeen Independent School District met Thursday to break ground on what will soon be the district's sixth high school.
The new facility was made possible thanks to voters who approved a $426 million bond package to fund the high school in 2018.
KISD has seen rapid growth since Ft. Hood arrived in 1942. As of 2019, the district has become the largest in the area with 7,000 employees and around 46,000 students enrolled.
According to the district, the massive 432,000 square foot facility, located on Chaparral Rd., is scheduled to open in 2022.
"This is truly a remarkable day," Superintendent Dr. John Craft said. "It's a great day to be able to celebrate and recognize the tremendous effort of our entire community. This is going to be an amazing facility that will offer so many opportunities for generations to come."
High school number six will be able to serve more than 3,000 students, according to the district.
Middle school KISD students hoping to be some of the first students to enroll in the new facility were at Thursday's ceremony.
"It's going to come out to be something amazing," eighth grade student Jadis Resendez said. "I'm just honored to see what it is, and when I go to high school I'm going to see what it looks like."
