BELTON, Texas — Many Central Texas organizations are stepping up during these uncertain times, including Helping Hands by making sure the community is getting the food they need.
Helping Hands in Belton is a client choice food pantry where families can go once a week to pickup groceries, but executive director Tasha Roberts said they've had to close for safety reasons.
"We have completely moved to a new distribution model. Right now we are doing home deliveries of approximately a months worth of supplemental groceries," Roberts said.
It's for families who would normally rely on the food pantry for their groceries, but it's now also for those who are facing a temporary economic crisis.
"We really want to make sure our neighbors are able to stay healthy, stay fed. As children are eating at home and not in school we want to make sure that families have access to the resources they need," Roberts said.
Families can sign up for home deliveries and volunteers will pick them up at Helping Hands then leave them at their front door without having direct contact.
So far they've had a good response with volunteers waiting to do as much they can to help their community in a time of crisis.
"It's brought a lot of joy I know into our staff, into my life just being able to look at that in a time that's so uncertain and realize people are still doing lots of good things," Roberts said.
Helping Hands has also partnered with Belton ISD to deliver grab and go meals to students who can't go to one of their pickup locations.
