Coryell County Chief Deputy Mark Wilcox resigned Tuesday after being placed on leave more than a week ago.
Sgt. Ryan Howard with the Texas Department of Public Safety said a formal investigation began based on a complaint out of Coryell County.
Wilcox was placed on extended leave from the Coryell Sheriff's Office on Oct. 22 over a personnel issue. He was not allowed in the jail, his office or the building.
The details of the matter were not provided, but Sheriff Scott Williams said there is a possibility of multiple incidents and criminal charges.
Wilcox had been with the department for at least 13 years, Williams said.
