Coryell County chief deputy resigns, Texas Rangers open criminal investigation

CORYELL COUNTY, Texas — Editor's note: The video in this story is from Oct. 24, 2019 when Coryell County Chief Deputy Mark Wilcox was placed on extended leave.

Coryell County Chief Deputy Mark Wilcox resigned Tuesday after being placed on leave more than a week ago.

Sgt. Ryan Howard with the Texas Department of Public Safety said a formal investigation began based on a complaint out of Coryell County.  

Wilcox was placed on extended leave from the Coryell Sheriff's Office on Oct. 22 over a personnel issue. He was not allowed in the jail, his office or the building.

The details of the matter were not provided, but Sheriff Scott Williams said there is a possibility of multiple incidents and criminal charges.

Wilcox had been with the department for at least 13 years, Williams said.
