Copperas Cove Police Department offering free steering wheel locks for Kia and Hyundai owners

The two car brands have recently been popular targets for thefts, leading some local police departments to offer the locks to car owners.

COPPERAS COVE, Texas — The Copperas Cove Police Department is offering free steering wheel locks to Copperas Cove residents who own certain models of Kia or Hyundai vehicles.

The giveaway comes after a recent rise in thefts of Kias and Hyundais, in part due to a trend on social media.

Copperas Cove PD said residents who own a 2011-2022 Kia or Hyundai vehicle can stop by the department, located at  302 E Ave E in Copperas Cove, on Wednesday, Jan. 3 to receive their free lock.

To receive a lock, residents must bring proof of residency and insurance. The giveaway is open to Copperas Cove residents only and only one lock will be given per qualifying vehicle.

Residents can visit the Copperas Cove PD lobby to pick up the locks from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. or 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Jan. 3. Copperas Cove PD said residents can ask for LT Baker.

Copperas Cove PD said there will be a limited supply, and the locks will be given on a first-come, first-serve basis.

The Temple Police Department also recently held a steering wheel lock giveaway to residents in an effort to combat the rising thefts.

A steering wheel lock is a metal rod that connects to the steering wheel of a vehicle to prevent it from turning and will only unlock with a designated key.
