LAMPASAS COUNTY, Texas — The Bell County Sheriff's Department said one of its long-time deputies passed away Monday morning of "natural causes."
Sgt. Robert L. Pettigrew died at his home in Lampasas County surrounded by family, according to the sheriff's department.
Pettigrew was 59-years-old and started his career with the Bell County Sheriff’s Department in March of 1993.
Visitation has been scheduled for Saturday from 1:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Church of Christ, located at 306 W. Avenue E in Copperas Cove.
Funeral services will be at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday at the Church of Christ located at 306 W. Avenue E in Copperas Cove. The church service will be live-streamed. A link will be available on the Bell County Sheriff’s Department Facebook page.
Because of social distancing and occupancy guidelines, seating will be limited to family, close friends of the family and as many of Robert’s Bell County Sheriff’s Department family as possible.
Burial will follow the service at the Copperas Cove Cemetery located at 415 E. Avenue A in Copperas Cove.
Sgt. Pettigrew worked as a Correctional Officer before he was promoted to deputy and took over as our D.A.R.E. Officer and then as Operations Sergeant, the sheriff's office said.
This is the second death of a Sheriff’s Deputy with the Department in 28 hours.
Deputy John Rhoden was killed early Sunday morning when he was hit by an 18-wheeler on I-35 while trying to lay down spike strips to stop a vehicle involved in a chase.
