Central Texas teacher discharged from hospital after month-long battle with COVID-19

David Guel was admitted to the hospital on March 25 and spent 17 days on a ventilator. He was finally discharged April 25.

WACO, Texas — David Guel, 45, was discharged from Ascension Providence with much fanfare as he was the fifth COVID-19 patient recovered at the hospital.

Designated a "Code Sunshine" nurses, doctors and support staff lined the halls to cheer as "Walking on Sunshine" played during Guel's discharge. 

He was admitted March 25 and spent 17 days on a ventilator. 

"Ascension Providence is grateful to be part of a generous community and proud of the incredible work being done by our caregivers ans support teams," the hospital said in a release. 

Guel is a teacher at Connally High School and spent more than half of his time in the hospital in critical condition and on a ventilator.
