Hundreds turn out for free food drive thru at Waco ISD Stadium

The Central Texas Food Bank offered free food boxes to help those facing food insecurity during the COVID-19 pandemic.

WACO, Texas — Hundreds of cars lined up at Waco Independent School District Stadium for a free food distribution drive-thru organized by Central Texas Food Bank and its network of mobile food pantries.

The event went from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. Tuesday.

People received two emergency food boxes each, one containing shelf-stable items and the other containing frozen items.

Combined, the two boxes contained approximately 48 pounds of items like peanut butter, brown rice, canned tuna or chicken, fruits, vegetables, frozen chicken, frozen orange juice and bread.

The number of food boxes was limited. Central Texas Food Bank asked that only one person from each household attend for safety reasons.

Pickup was only available to people with cars to follow social distancing guidelines.

Central Texas Food Bank works with several pantries throughout the area. For more information on where those sites are and how to get help, go to the food bank's website.

A second food distribution drive-thru was scheduled for Thursday at the Temple American Legion from 9 a.m. to Noon.
