KILLEEN, Texas — The first night of 2024 is forecasted to be a cold one in Central Texas, and the City of Killeen is preparing by opening a warming center at the Killeen Arts and Activities Center for those who need a break from the chilly temperatures.
The Center, located at 801 N. 4th St., will open at 8 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 1 and remain open until 8 a.m. the next morning, Jan. 2. The City said if no one is using the shelter by 11:30 p.m. on Monday, the warming center will close.
According to the City of Killeen, City warming centers are set up to offer temporary relief from the cold, meaning no beds or showers are provided. The City says its policy is to open a warming center if the temperature or wind chill factor is forecasted to fall below 32 degrees.
The City of Killeen said City buildings, such as City Hall, libraries, the Recreation Center and Police Headquarters are always open to the public and available for warming or cooling during each facility's normal business hours. All community members and visitors to public facilities are required to adhere to a code of conduct, said the City.
The City of Killeen said it also partners with local organizations to operate warming and cooling centers. If churches, community groups or other organizations are able and willing to open their facilities and provide volunteers for a center, they can contact the Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Management at (254) 501-7706.
