BELTON, Texas — The Cochran, Blair and Potts department store in Belton, Texas, known as the state's oldest, has been a central part of the local shopping scene since 1884.
This seventh-generation family-owned business is led by President Robert Potts.
Potts emphasizes the family aspect of the business, saying, "It's kind of in our blood, but since it's a family business, I get to work with my family. Business doesn't stop when the door closes, you still go home and work."
He attributes the store's longevity to the family's deep connection with the community and its ability to cater to a wide range of customers.
"We have something for everybody. From kid's clothing to accessories, men's and women's clothing all the way to work boots."
The store building itself is a blend of commerce and history, with the ground floor dedicated to retail and the second floor serving as a museum showcasing the store's rich heritage.
It has become a landmark in Belton, drawing attention from visitors and media, including Chet Garner, host of the PBS travel series "The Daytripper."
In 2016, the store underwent an interior restoration, and plans are underway for an exterior renovation in 2024.
Potts shared his enthusiasm for the upcoming project saying, "We're about to start exterior renovations to the building, which we're excited about," expressed Potts. "We've got a lot of cool details we're bringing back into the store including copper fixtures and antique accessories on the outside."
If you'd like to visit the historic department store, you can find it at 221 E Central Ave, Belton, TX 76513.
