Gatesville PD rolls out seniors welfare check-in program

The Gatesville Police Department's 'Care Call' program is for seniors needing anything from household chores to emergency assistance.

GATESVILLE, Texas — The Gatesville Police Department launched a program this week to assist senior citizens living within the city limits, called the "Care Call" program.

Police Chief Brad Hunt said the department is offering its services to seniors, who can sign up for a weekly check-in call, and in-person help if necessary.

"If you have a problem with a neighbor, if a dog is barking that's bothering you, if there's a suspicious person that's around (they can call)," Hunt said.  "Not for the kind of things that people would normally be calling the police for, but we will be calling folks every week and we will note any issues they may have."

Hunt said in the application, residents can also fill out an emergency contact that the department can call if a resident cannot be reached.  As a precaution, the department will send an officer to a resident's home as well.

"If it's one day, one person that has more peace of mind than before, I'm glad," Hunt said.

Hunt encourages all senior citizens to sign up for the program.

"It's in the name of the program, it's caring," Hunt said.  "If there's a concern by the citizen when we're receiving the call we can relay that to an officer and get them en route."

Any senior citizens living in Gatesville who would like to be part of the program can go to the Police Department to fill out a form, or call 254-865-2226 and ask to be added to the Care Calls list.
