City of Killeen looks forward to adding more green spaces, parks with revitalization of Conder Park

A $4.6-million project updates one more park in Killeen, setting an example for adding more in the future.

KILLEEN, Texas — The renovation of Conder Community Park is only the beginning of a very green future for the City of Killeen.

Councilmembers Michael Boyd and Jessica Gonzalez want to see this project inspire more, bringing numerous parks and revitalizations to the area.

Gonzalez is especially happy with the Conder playground being complete. It's a part of a $4.6-million project that's been in the works for almost three years.

"To make this area more family friendly, it's inspiring and shows we were on the right track," Gonzalez added.

Community members enjoying the new place to play agree.

"I've been here for four years and this is a game changer," one park goer said. "I'm glad that there's more updated parks," another added.

Keilah Reyes with Killeen Parks and Recreation said the outdoor space that's been there since the 70s will now be able to stick around for another decade or more.

"It's adaptive and has things for kids from two to twelve," Reyes added.

It also has a cover that protects kids, families and the playground from the harsh Central Texas sun.

This project is just the beginning for Killeen. Boyd was not part of this project, but he is excited to bring more parks to his area on the west side of Killeen, where he said there are currently no parks.

"West Killeen is the fastest growing area of Killeen and people need a place to go and get a break from work or rest...we just don't have that," Boyd said.

Boyd added that there are many projects in the works to bring more trails, parks and green spaces to West Killeen.
