TROY, Texas — A celebration of life and candle vigil is being held to honor the lives of the Maynards, a Troy family that has been lost at sea off the coast of Alaska since Aug. 3.
The celebration of life and candle vigil will be held on Aug. 30 at Troy First Assembly of God, 722 W Main St. from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. At 8:15 p.m., the celebration will move to the baseball field where the Troy Baseball Association will host the candle vigil for Colton and Brantley Maynard as both boys played for the association.
The Church streamed the vigil on Facebook. The full video can be watched on their page at this link.
The church began the celebration of life by showing a slideshow of the Maynard family, before scripture was read and a family friend spoke to those gathered.
Officers from the Troy Police Department spoke about how Colton and Brantley Maynard were always excited to see them, presenting them with the Citizen on Patrol Award on behalf of the department.
Representatives from the Troy Baseball Association also honored Colton with the All Star Player of a Lifetime Award.
Finally, the floor was opened to those who knew the Maynard family to share their memories of the family or pay their respects.
The vigil comes after the Alaska Dive Search Rescue and Recovery Team called off their search for the missing Maynard family of Troy, the organization has announced.
On Saturday, Aug. 3, David Maynard, 42, his wife Mary, 37, and their two sons, Colton, 11, and Brantley, 7, were aboard a 28-foot aluminum boat with four others when it capsized 16 miles west of Homer Spit around 7 p.m. The four others survived, but the Maynards were never found, despite search efforts by the U.S. Coast Guard.
The Troy community has come together in the wake of the tragedy. A GoFundMe for the family has already surpassed its $10,000 goal.
The community can send flowers to the celebration by contacting Woods Flowers at 254-778-8506.
