GoFundMe for Troy family lost at sea in Alaska surpasses $10k goal

As of late Tuesday morning, the GoFundMe has raised just over $11,300.

TROY, Texas — A GoFundMe that was set up for a Troy family lost at sea in Alaska has exceeded its initial $10,000 goal.

As of late Tuesday morning, the GoFundMe has raised just over $11,300.

On Monday, Aug. 5, the U.S. Coast Guard confirmed to 6 News after a family friend had shared on Facebook that Mary and David Maynard haven't been found that they had suspended a search for the family.

A few days prior, on Saturday, Aug. 3, the Coast Guard was notified about a 28-foot vessel taking on water around 7 p.m. near Homer, located to the southwest of Anchorage.

Authorities continued to search for the family through Sunday, but later suspended the search due to a number of factors around the search, one of which was the 51-degree water temperature when the Coast Guard was searching for the Maynard family. It was presumed the boat sank completely.

"Any time we make a decision to suspend a search and rescue case is a very difficult one to make," said U.S. Coast Guard Petty Officer Shannon Kerney to 6 News on Monday. "Cases that are suspended, they're only suspended pending the development of new information. If anything comes to light, any new information that we get, we're more than happy and willing to go out and continue our search. Our hearts are definitely with the families right now as they grieve."

A note about the Maynard family was shared on GoFundMe by organizer Tanashea Aviles. It can be found below:

"The Maynards are not just friends, they are family to me and a lot of others. By know a lot of us have heard about the tragic news. For those who don't know, this sweet family of four was lost at sea on their vacation to Alaska. Mary's parents are still there hoping to bring them home. This family is going through a lot right now. We are asking for prayers and donations if you can, to help with unexpected expenses that the family would have to cover so suddenly.

The Maynard's left a huge imprint on many people, from the laughter they brought to us, the love and family-oriented connection they provided, it is indescribable the void that will be left behind but I know if we come together as a family and a community they would know how much they meant to everyone."
