'We can no longer continue' | Humane Society of Central Texas explains why they decided to leave the Waco Animal Shelter

The Humane Society of Central Texas pointed to changes in leadership at the Waco Animal Shelter that led to "a decline in the quality of animal care."

WACO, Texas — The Humane Society of Central Texas (HSCTX) officially cut ties with the Waco Animal Shelter Monday, Aug 26, after announcing plans to leave in July.

Editor's Note: The attached video aired on July 25.

In their press release, HSCTX pointed to multiple changes in leadership that led "to a decline in shelter oversight and the quality of animal care."

HSCTX claims the City of Waco hired shelter directors without experience, pointing out the position's $120,000 salary. The shelter director position was recently taken over by a police commander after the city put the animal shelter under the Waco Police Department, according to the society.

"HSCTX staff, who have stepped in to address gaps in care, have faced punitive efforts and measures, making it increasingly difficult to maintain the high standards of care the community expects and deserves," they said.

The entire statement can be read at this link.

HSCTX asks the community to push for better standards and says that some shelter staff members still share their goals.

The society is still proud of the accomplishments they achieved during their partnership with the city. Since 2016, they have saved over 38,000 animals and maintained a live exit rate exceeding 90%, according to the society.

"We are grateful for the partnership maintained with the Humane Society of Central Texas over the years and the many animals' lives saved in collaboration with our Animal Services staff," said City Manager Bradley Ford. "We are taking every necessary step to ensure a smooth transition and to uphold our commitment to animal welfare for our community and shelter partners. All services, including adoption, fostering, and volunteering, will continue at the same facility. I look forward to supporting the Humane Society of Central Texas in their future animal welfare role in the community."

Moving forward, HSCTX said they plan to move to a foster-based rescue, create support groups for animal welfare, re-open their Pet Pantry, and help people get microchipping and spay/neutering services.
