Waco PD warns of street lights out, how to safely handle them

In a Twitter post, the department said it was getting reports of street lights flashing.

WACO, Texas โ€” The Waco Police Department is warning drivers who happen to be on the icy roads that it is getting reports of traffic light outages Thursday night.

In a Twitter post, police shared photos of the lights out on Lake Shore Drive and MLK/Steinbeck Bend Drive just after sundown around 7 p.m.

"Please use these as a FOUR WAY STOP," the department said.

In an earlier post,  police also mentioned that with the icy conditions, not only will the roads be slick and potentially dangerous, but ice may down power lines in the area, too. If you see a downed power line, stay at least 10 feet away from it, police said.

"High-voltage electricity can jump to anyone who gets too close," the tweet said.

Below are other safety tips when there's a downed power line, according to the Electrical Safety Foundation International's website:

  • Always assume a downed power line is active
  • Move away from the line and remove anything that may be able to touch it
  • Do not step in water around the downed line
  • Do not try to remove the line with a non-conductive material like a broom stick
  • Don't drive over downed lines
  • Contact your utility company to report the downed power line immediately
  • Do not touch a person who is in contact with a downed power line. Instead call 911
