'My heart goes out to them," | West Temple homeowners work to salvage belongings after storm damage

At least 50 homes in West Temple are roofless or have suffered from extensive damage since Wednesday's storms and tornadoes.

TEMPLE, Texas — Since the EF-2 tornado ravaged the Temple on May 22, people are now assessing the damage and returning home to collect what they can.

Temple teacher Lacy Bentley visited her home for the first time on Monday and says her home was hit hard.

"I don't have a garage and the garage door was taken off of my house on the side and my roof is really messed up," Bentley explained.

But still, she says her damage is not as bad as what she saw when she drove through her neighborhood in West Temple.

"My heart goes out to them," She added. "Just like me, I know those affected are wondering how they're going to pay for everything."

West Temple was one of the hardest hit areas. On Parkfield Lane, over 50 homes have interior damage, at least 10 homes have roofs that were completely ripped off, and cars left behind that are completely totaled.

All Memorial Day, families visited their homes, filed their insurance claims and took what they could inside their homes to stay elsewhere.

A number of organizations visited Temple to help with storm damage clean up. The organization, Texas on Mission, is a Christian-based disaster relief organization that works to provide hope, help, and healing in times like this.

"This is nothing new to us," Incident commander Wendell Romans explained. We have been helping disaster victims all across Texas for the last few months and we have been extremely busy."

The organization provides a lot of help for victims including providing clean drinking water for people around the globe and undertaking construction projects. They have been in Central Texas since the day after the tornado blew through and have allowed people to borrow chainsaws and other equipment to clean up debris.

"We work across all 50 states and have over 4,000 volunteers waiting to help," Romans added. "So whenever a city is needing some help, we help provide that."

To help the organization fulfil their mission, information can be found here.

The City of Temple said in a statement that it may take weeks, even months to fully clean up the city.
