Killeen first responders aid Temple, Bell County following tornado

Multiple City of Killeen departments are assisting the Bell County, Temple and Morgan's Point Resort communities following an EF-2 tornado on May 22.

KILLEEN, Texas — First responders from the City of Killeen are helping those impacted by an EF-2 tornado on Wednesday, May 22.

The Killeen Fire Department, Killeen Police Department, Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Management and Killeen Department of Public Works are all helping Bell County, the City of Temple and Morgan's Point Resort communities following the tornado.

The Killeen Police Department has about 20 units assisting with various tasks to help Temple, such as traffic control, door-to-door searches and "adding a police presence," according to a news release. The police department's drone unit is also assisting Morgan's Point Resort with damage assessment. 

The Killeen Fire Department and OHSEM are assisting Temple, Morgan's Point Resort and Bell County Emergency Management representatives with coordination and acquiring of resources. The Killeen Public Works Department staff is assisting with debris removal in Temple, a news release said. 

The fire department also sent personnel to Morgan's Point Resort to assist with incident command, search and debris removal, and sent two ambulances and two emergency vehicles to assist. 

The National Weather Service issued a tornado watch for the Killeen area just after noon on Wednesday, and that was updated to a tornado warning just before 6 p.m. The City of Killeen sounded the outdoor warning sirens at that time.

There have been some reports of downed trees and damage in Killeen and residents are to place any brush or debris from the storm curbside for pickup at no charge. Allow a few days for completion, a news release said. If the debris is large, call the city’s transportation division at 254-616-3153.
