'Disaster on his doorstep': Temple man describes storm damage

Temple resident Cody Hoffman said he was just steps away when a tree crashed into his home.

TEMPLE, Texas — It was the last thing Cody Hoffman expected. He was watching severe weather coverage and decided to move his front porch furniture and potted plants to avoid damage.

"I just got inside the door," said Hoffman.

Hoffman's shade tree was a summer time delight. Now it's the disaster on his doorstep.

"When they were talking on the TV, I was putting plants away," Hoffman said. "I had just gotten finished when all of a sudden I got right to where my front door is and all of a sudden 'kaboom!' It came down and I just froze in my tracks. I didn't know what was going on."

The massive tree is now crushing Hoffman's front porch and roof.

The entire street, just off 3rd Street in Temple, is a trail of damage.

Hoffman said he has been living in Temple for 15 years and has never seen anything like this, but he isn't worried about the work ahead. He's just thankful it wasn't worse.

"I'm alive. That's the thing," said Hoffman.
