UPDATE: W.S. Young Dr. Bridge to close due to winter weather, police say

Killeen will be closing bridges, some roads, hosting warming centers around the city and more as temperatures will be dropping below freezing starting Wednesday.

KILLEEN, Texas — In a live video posted to Facebook Wednesday night, the Killeen Police Department announced that the W.S. Young Drive Bridge is going to close because of the winter storm.

This comes after the City of Killeen announced resources for its residents, such as warming centers that will be available to help them shelter from the freezing temperatures overnight.

The storm is expected to bring freezing temperatures, ice and sleet to the area and the city wants to offer resources to its residents found below.

Warming Centers

The warming centers will open Wednesday night through Sunday. The center locations and hours are as follows:

Wednesday, Feb. 2

  • Rosa Hereford Community Center, 2201 E. Veterans Memorial Blvd.
  •  8 p.m. to 8 a.m.

Thursday to Friday, Feb. 3 to Feb. 4

  • Moss Rose Center, 1103 E Ave. E

Road Closures

The city says road crews will be on standby, but that some bridges and overpasses will likely be closed due to weather. Right now, there are no road closures.

Road crews have already started salting the roads to prepare for the weather, according to the city.

The city urges residents to use extreme caution and maintain a safe distance between you and other cars when driving.

Pipes and Irrigation

All water pump stations have been winterized, according to the city. Water storage tanks are filled to capacity to be able to temporarily provide water in case of a power outage.

The city wants to remind citizens to wrap their pipes and fittings before the cold comes through.

COVID SITES

The COVID Service Sites will not operate on Thursday or Friday.

Trash Collection

When it comes to Thursday's trash collection, residents can expect trash to be collected on Wednesday, according to the city.

Friday’s routes will likely not begin before 8 a.m. If the weather is too severe the city says they will push collection back to Saturday.
