Winter storm warning extended, road conditions get worse as freezing rain continues to fall

Expect freezing rain and black ice on the roadways if you have to drive somewhere Tuesday. More severe winter weather is on its way.

CENTRAL, Texas — Add slick roads and freezing rain to your morning commute Tuesday as a blast of cold winter weather pushes through Central Texas.

Meteorologist Ashley Carter said this winter weather will remain in the area through Thursday morning but there's still a ways to go.

Light freezing drizzle is scattered across the area. The rain is what freezes on contact.

With below freezing temps, that means slick and freezing road.

College Station is the only area that has seen temperatures over freezing, so we're in for a cold one.

Texas Today reporter Meredith Haas was out live all Tuesday morning reporting on the road conditions.

"I lived in Pennsylvania, and it was never this cold," Haas said.

The mix of rain and freezing temperatures made this happen. As the morning went on, the winds got worse and worse, adding to the brutality of the chill.

Texas Today warns everyone to not drive on back roads. Yes, the main roads like I-35 have been treated, but as Ashley said, those roads will start to ice over through out the day.

Again, do not drive if you don't have to.

The rain and freezing temps are going no where and they're only expected to worsen.

Temple Residents can call 254-298-5550 for a ride to warming centers. Waco Transit System is providing rides until 6 p.m. Tuesday if needed. Please call 254-405-4247 and they will make arrangements to pick you up safely. The city of Killeen does not have a number for rides and only have two warming centers -- but if you are in dire need for a ride to warmth in Killeen you can call the police department for assistance 254-501-8830.
