TEMPLE, Texas — With Tuesday, Aug. 20 being the hottest day of the year, cities around Central Texas have opened up cooling centers and/or public buildings to help people beat the heat.
Designated cooling centers include:
- Friends in Crisis Shelter on 412 E Sprott St. in Killeen is open every day that's over 100 degrees from 1 p.m. until 7 a.m. the next morning
- Salvation Army McLane Center of Hope at 419 West Ave. G in Temple is open 1 p.m. to 8 p.m. Free dinner is served in the dining area
- Salvation Army Community Kitchen on 300 Webster Ave. in Waco is open 24 hours every day over 100 degrees
Here's a list of public buildings that you can visit during business hours. Most city buildings are open to the public, and are a good place to go temporarily.
In Belton:
- City Hall at 333 Water St. is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekdays
- Lena Armstrong Public Library at 301 E 1st Ave. 9:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. on weekdays, and from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday
In Cameron:
- Cameron Public Library at 304 E 3rd St. is open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday to Thursday
In Copperas Cove:
- Copperas Cove Public Library at 501 S Main St. is open 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday to Thursday, and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday and Saturday
In Gatesville:
- Gatesville Public Library at 111 N 8th St. is open 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday; 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday, Wednesday and Friday; and 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Saturday
In Groesbeck:
- Groesbeck Public Library at 601 W Yeagua St. is open from 10:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Thursday. It's also open 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday
In Hewitt:
- City Hall at 200 Patriot Circuit Ste C is open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekdays
- Hewitt Public Library at 200 Patriot Circuit Ste B is open 9:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday, but it closes at 5:30 p.m. on Friday and Saturday
In Jarrell:
- Jarrell Library and Resource Center at 113 Limestone Terrace is open 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday to Thursday, and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday
In Killeen:
- City of Killeen buildings are pen during normal business hours. These include City Hall, libraries, the Family Recreation Center, the North Precinct Police Department and Police Headquarters
In Lacy Lakeview:
- City Hall at 501 E Craven Ave. is open from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. on weekdays
In Lampasas:
- Lampasas Public Library at 201 S Main St. is open 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday to Thursday, but it closes at 5 p.m. on Friday and 3 p.m. on Saturday
In Marlin:
- Falls County Clerk Office at 125 Bridge St. is open 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on weekday
In Mexia:
- Gibbs Memorial Library at 305 E Rusk St. is open 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on weekdays, and it closes 4 p.m. on Saturday
In Robinson:
- City Hall at 111 W Lyndale Drive is open on weekdays 8 a.m. to 5 p.m..
In Salado:
- Salado Public Library at 1151 N Main St. is open 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday
In Temple:
- Temple Public Library at 100 W. Adams Ave. opens at 10 a.m. and closes at 7 p.m. on most weekdays, or 6 p.m. on Friday and Saturday
- Temple Railroad and Heritage Museum at 315 W. Avenue B is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
In Troy:
- Troy Public Library at 510 W Big Beaver Rd. is open 9:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Saturday
In Waco:
- Waco City Hall at 300 Austin Ave. is open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekdays
- Waco public libraries are open 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. every day
Authorities recommend staying hydrated, wearing light clothing, and never leaving people or pets in closed cars.
