TEXAS, USA — The holiday rush is here, and the roads are already bustling with Thanksgiving travelers.
According to the American Automobile Association (AAA), a record-breaking 71.7 million people are projected to travel by car this holiday week, with total travelers—across all modes of transportation—reaching nearly 80 million. This marks an increase of 1.7 million people compared to last year.
One key factor behind the surge in drivers this year is the drop in gas prices nationwide. In Bell, McLennan and Coryell counties, the average price of gas is just over $2.50 per gallon, making road trips more budget-friendly for families heading to Thanksgiving celebrations.
AAA spokesperson Daniel Armbruster offered a few tips for those looking to avoid the heaviest traffic:
- Plan Ahead: Arrive at your destination early or consider traveling on Thanksgiving Day to skip the worst congestion.
- Avoid High-Traffic Areas: Steering clear of known traffic hotspots could save you valuable time.
With record-breaking numbers for Thanksgiving travel, AAA anticipates the holiday rush will continue into Christmas, potentially setting more historic travel records.
TxDOT-Waco District spokesperson Jake Smith explained when traveling is expected to be the heaviest:
"TxDOT expects that we will have heavier traffic today (Wednesday) and come Saturday and Sunday," Smith explained. "So if you’re planning to be on the roadway this weekend, be prepared."
Smith added that regardless of traffic, driving safely is the number one priority.
"It’s the holiday season, and we know some folks like to celebrate with a drink, but we want to remind everyone: if you drink any amount of alcohol, do not get behind the wheel. Use a rideshare service, a sober friend or a family member to stay safe."
Smith recommends people visit DriveTexas.org to get a glimpse of traffic and driving conditions in their area.
