WACO, Texas — The City of Waco is launching a new electric scooter program downtown to allow riders to travel the streets on two wheels.
After the Superpedestrian Scooter Company dropped off a batch of 250 scooters for the city over the weekend, the illuminated light green scooters could be seen throughout downtown, bunched on corners and across sidewalks.
However, some Waco business owners question how oversight of the program will be handled.
"I don't know who's responsible, whether it be the City, the company or both. When you call the City, they say call the company, when you call the company, you can't get ahold of them," said Z's at the Curry owner Greg May.
May said on top of accident potential with drivers, the scooters have been left unattended on sidewalks throughout the city and parking lots, including his own.
"They get left, and I guess one of the biggest problems I have as a business owner is they get left in the back alley here behind us and they wouldn't move for days," May said.
If the scooters are not parked where they belong, Superpedestrian said the company will be notified and employees will bring the scooters back to their designated parking positions.
According to Superpedestrian, riders must be at least 18 years old and cannot ride while under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
May said these rules can breed problems if the program and riders aren't being held accountable.
"There has to be a company that takes a daily charge of it, staging them back up," May said. "There also needs to be more no-ride zones."
Superpedestrian charges $1 to activate the scooters and 39 cents per minute to use the scooters.
Boundaries for the electronic scooters stretch from Herring Avenue to La Salle Avenue, North 26th Street to East Waco Drive and the New Dallas Highway.
6 News reached out to Superpedestrian and the City for more clarification on the rules and regulations but we have not heard back.
