Two closures coming to Freestone County starting July 15

The closures are weather permitting.

FAIRFIELD, Freestone County — The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) has announced closures coming to Freestone and Leon Counties beginning on Monday, July 15.

Starting at 7 a.m. that day, the I-45 northbound and southbound rest areas will be closed in order to remove and replace the current roadway. TxDOT says the closure will run through the end of the month and reopen at the start of August. Signage will be placed in advance of the area where the road work is being conducted.

The temporary traffic pattern that will be installed is part of a $5 million reconstruction project of both rest areas in Freestone and Leon County. The entire project is slated to be completed by the third quarter of 2027.

Another closure in Freestone County is taking place that same day. The closure involves the northbound entrance to I-45 from FM 27 and is expected to reopen on Aug. 16.

Signs notifying drivers of the closure will be up and will be placed prior to the closure. TxDOT says drivers will need to use the I-45 entrance to the south of West Commerce Street to get to I-45 north or find an alternate route.

The road work is part of a nearly $37 million I-45 Frontage Road project that is expected to be completed in Spring 2027. The project is contracted to A.L Helmcamp, Inc.

Both closures are weather permitting.
