15-year-old Killeen HS student struck, killed by train

"We extend our sincere condolences and heartfelt sympathy to the student’s family and friends," Killeen ISD said in a message to parents.

KILLEEN, Texas — 6 News confirmed with Killeen Police that a 15-year-old Killeen High School student was struck and killed by a train Tuesday afternoon.

A little before 5 p.m., the department said it was responding to an incident on 38th Street near the school and asked drivers to avoid the area.

Police redirected traffic is from Water Street to Atkinson Avenue until further notice, as of 6:20 p.m.

Killeen ISD sent the following message to employees and parents of the high school:

"It is with great sadness that we report a Killeen High School student was involved in a tragic accident after school involving a train. We extend our sincere condolences and heartfelt sympathy to the student’s family and friends.

We wanted to let you know of this tragedy and share factual details as we are permitted by police and the student’s family. It is easy to get caught up in rumors at a time like this. We will only share details we know to be true and we ask that you do the same, for the sake of the family."

The school district also said in the message the crisis counselors will be available to provide support to students on Wednesday and throughout the week. It also encouraged parents to talk to their children about what happened.

"We encourage you to also talk with your child as it is important for students to express their feelings to trusted adults and loved ones. Traumatic events such as the sudden loss of a friend or peer can trigger emotional responses that may require additional counseling support," the message said.
