KEMPNER, Texas — Highway 190 at Interstate 14 is back open in Kempner after authorities closed the area off due to a potential explosive device found among garage sale items, according to the City of Kempner.
In a post on Facebook, the city said after 8 a.m., someone made contact with police in the 12000 block of Highway 190 about a box of miscellaneous items they bought at a garage sale. The city said the person became concerned with one of the items and gave it to the police chief.
Upon inspection, Chief Eddie Rodriguez said the item was a "potential explosive device," according to a news release.
As a precaution, authorities shut down the area as several agencies responded to the incident. They include Kempner Volunteer Fire Department, Texas Department of Public Safety, Lampasas County Sheriff’s Office and Fort Hood Explosive Ordinance Disposal Teams.
According to police, bomb technicians confirmed it was an explosive device and once made safe, the device was turned over to the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms.
The highway was reopened a little before 12:30 p.m.
The Kempner Volunteer Fire Department said more information about the incident will be released at a later time.
