One killed after car 'fully engulfed in fire' after crash in Troy

Police said the reason for the crash is under investigation, but speed is believed to be a factor.

TROY, Texas — One person is dead after a single-vehicle crash in Troy, according to the Troy Police Department.

According to police, officers responded to a traffic accident around the 309-mile marker of Interstate 35 around 9:44 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 28. Police said they found a vehicle "fully engulfed in fire" in the inside lane of southbound I-35.

One person in the vehicle had reportedly been ejected and killed in the crash.

Police stated that according to an investigation, they believe the car was southbound on the service road when it left the roadway into the grass median between the main lanes and service road.

The vehicle traveled several hundred feet through the median, police said, before it hit the concrete and rocks on the northside of Big Elm Creek.

Police said they believe the vehicle went airborne, "making impact" on the southside of the creek embankment before rolling up onto the interstate main lanes where it caught fire.

Troy PD said the reason for the crash is still under investigation, but they believe speed was a factor.

Only one person was in the vehicle, police said, and no other vehicles or people were involved.

Troy PD said it was assisted by the Texas Department of Public Safety, Bell County Sheriff's Office, Little River Police Department, Troy Volunteer Fire Department, Temple Towing and Grones Environmental Services

Police said they have made a "preliminary identification" of the person who died in the crash, and are working with family to confirm the person's identity. The investigation is reportedly ongoing.
