Death of man from motorcycle collision with cargo van under investigation by Killeen PD

Police say the man driving the motorcycle did not have a helmet, while the passenger did.

KILLEEN, Texas — A 39-year-old man is dead and another is critically injured following a motorcycle-cargo van crash that took place in Killeen late Sunday night, according to the Killeen Police Department.

Around 11:36 p.m. that evening, officers went to the Martin Luther King Jr Blvd-Hackberry Drive intersection to investigate a crash involving a motorcycle. Officers learned through an initial investigation that a 2014 GMC cargo van was headed south on MLK and was making a left turn onto Hackberry Drive.

While the cargo van was making the turn, the 39-year-old man and another 27-year-old male passenger hit the van while going very fast. According to police, the 39-year-old man driving the motorcycle did not have a helmet on, while the passenger did.

Justice of the Peace Nicola James pronounced the 39-year-old dead at the scene. The passenger was taken in critical condition to Baylor Scott and White Hospital by first responders from the Killeen Fire Department.

No other injuries were reported.

Police say the name of the man that died is not being released until next of kin has been notified.
