DPS: 50-year-old dead after crash after driver falls asleep at the wheel

The crash occurred Monday evening, according to Texas DPS.

GATESVILLE, Coryell County — A Gatesville woman is dead after a head-on crash Monday evening with a driver that fell asleep behind the wheel, according to Texas DPS.

The accident occurred in the 12000 block of Highway 84 east of Gatesville, and DPS officers were notified of the crash around 9:25 p.m.

DPS says a 38-year-old man driving a 2016 Subaru Crosstrek SUV from Carlsbad, New Mexico was headed west and admitted to falling asleep at the wheel. His car crossed over into eastbound traffic, hitting a 2022 Mitsubishi Outlander SUV driven by a 69-year-old woman from Gatesville.

The passenger of the Mitsubishi, identified as 50-year-old Crystal Anne Nagal of Clifton, was pronounced dead at the crash site. DPS says next of kin has been notified.

Officials say a test to analyze the 38-year-old's blood was taken, but the results are pending.

DPS also says that drivers who feel fatigued should be aware of the risk they are putting themselves and others at, as those who drive fatigued are at a much greater risk of being involved in a traffic crash.
