CALDWELL, Texas — When County Road 378 in Caldwell, TX completely washed out on early Friday afternoon of December 22, 2023, community members and officials knew who was to blame.
Beavers in the area are known to build damns close to County Road 378. At a certain portion, the road is surrounded by two bodies of water known as tanks. This is where the destruction occurred.
"Thinking okay, can they get this fixed. And because it's Friday. It's Christmas Eve. Christmas and Christmas even is coming. Families trying to come in and stuff. And just not knowing if they could do it," said Gary Jeter who lives at the end of County Road 378 where he was essentially cut off from the rest of the world.
County construction teams were quick to repair the road to allow all-terrain vehicles to pass carrying people and much needed supplies. These supplies ranged from Christmas gifts to insulin.
"A lot of people are in a lot worse shape than what we all are," said Jeter.
Though the beavers did make for inconvenience this holiday, neighbors on the road have chosen gratitude for everyone's safety and for county employees who worked around the clock to give a helping hand.
