KILLEEN, Texas — To help promote safety during Fourth of July celebrations, the Killeen Police Department will have additional patrol officers monitor the roads for any possible drunk or impaired drivers.
This monitoring is part of the Selective Traffic Enforcement Program, or STEP, and will occur from now until Sunday, July 9.
"During this time, there is a higher likelihood of impaired drivers on the roadways, causing an increased potential for alcohol-related crashes involving injuries or deaths," Killeen PD said in a news release.
Killeen PD encourages those who plan to drink during Independence Day festivities to make plans to safely get home.
"A person’s abilities, decision-making skills, and judgment can diminish while under the influence of alcohol or drugs," Killeen PD said. "Consider using a taxi or car service, a designated driver, or public transportation as an alternative to driving after drinking."
If you see someone driving while under the influence, you're encouraged to call 911.
Killeen PD is able to participate in STEP thanks to a grant by the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT).
