Texas Power Four school update after Week 1 of college football

See how these seven Texas college football teams stand after the first week of college football.

TEXAS, USA — College football is officially back for the 2024 season, and Texas is well represented in the new landscape of conferences. Texas and SMU both find themselves in new conferences to start the season, as Texas now has seven Power Four schools. Here is how all of them look after the first week.

Baylor

Unlike last season in the loss against Texas State, Baylor took care of business in Week 1 against Tarleton State. Although the Bears won convincingly 45-3, sixth-year transfer QB Dequan Finn threw two interceptions. Finn will have to shake off the rust before their next game against Big 12 favorite and No. 12 ranked Utah.

Houston

Houston got upset and embarrassed in Week 1, losing 27-7 to UNLV. New Head Coach Willie Fritz's first game did not go as planned, as QB Donovan Smith looked lost in the opener completing only 50% of his passes to go along with two interceptions. There is little hope for a bounce back this week either, as the Cougars head up to Norman to play No. 16 Oklahoma.

SMU

Their first season in the ACC, the Mustangs had a head start on the season, heading into this week 2-0 after wins against Nevada and Houston Christian. SMU took care of business in both games, but the real test for SMU making the jump to a Power Four conference starts this weekend. They'll host BYU as they try and start 3-0 to begin conference play.

TCU

After a disappointing season following their National Championship run in the 2022 season, The Frogs start 1-0 after a win against Stanford in Palo Alto. This week should be a cakewalk for TCU as they welcome Long Island University to Fort Worth for their Week two matchup.

Texas

No. 4 Texas looks prepped for another run to the College Football Playoff after their 52-0 win over Colorado State. Quinn Ewers and the Longhorns can make a statement this week if they can pull off a win against the defending National Champion Michigan Wolverines in Ann Arbor.

Texas A&M

No. 20 Texas A&M showcased solid defense in Week 1, but QB Conner Weigman struggled against No. 7 Notre Dame's defense, going 12/30 for 100 yards and two interceptions. New Head Coach Mike Elko's Aggie tenure didn't start on a good note, but a matchup against McNeese State gives Texas A&M the opportunity to get back on track before SEC play begins.

Texas Tech

In true Texas Tech fashion, their Week 1 matchup was a shootout with Abilene Christian, with 103 total points being scored. The Red Raiders were 31.5 point favorites before the game started, yet only won the game 52-51 after ACU went for a two-point conversion in overtime and did not covert, ending the game. QB Behren Morton and the Texas Tech offense was sharp, but Head Coach Joey McGuire's defense will need to reevaluate things heading into this week against Washington State.
