Temple ISD hires new head high school girls basketball coach

"Her passion for excellence from her players on and off the court really caught the attention of the interview committee."
RaShonta LeBlanc

Former Beaumont Central Coach RaShonta LeBlanc has been announced as the new Head Girls Basketball Coach for Temple High School.

LeBlanc has been the Head Girls Basketball Coach for 5A Beaumont Central for the past two years. In 2016, she took a team that was pre-season unranked and not picked by many to make the postseason all the way to the regional tournament.

She was also first assistant coach at Beaumont Central and Port Arthur Memorial High Schools for five years. Those teams made the playoffs four times during that period and compiled an 80-37 record.

Prior to her coaching career, LeBlanc was a member of an LSU Lady Tiger Basketball team that made It to the NCAA Final Four every year that she was in college. She won the Defensive Player of the Year award for her junior and senior seasons as part of that team.

Temple ISD Athletic Director Scott Stewart said LeBlanc’s “love for her players” was immediately evident.

“Her passion for excellence from her players on and off the court really caught the attention of the interview committee,” Coach Stewart said.

LeBlanc said she is excited because of the atmosphere.

“It seems like one big family in Temple. It seems like a great environment,” LeBlanc said. “Meeting Coach Stewart makes it feel like such a great environment, so I’m excited about being there and excited about meeting the girls.”

Coach LeBlanc said the girls can expect to see a team that is very, very competitive and plays hard.

“We’re going to be a disciplined team and we’re going to do the small things,” she said. “They’re going to expect me to go above and beyond and that’s what they’re going to get.”

Prior to her coaching career, LeBlanc was a member of an LSU Lady Tiger Basketball team that made It to the NCAA Final Four every year that she was in college. She won the Defensive Player of the Year award for her junior and senior seasons as part of that team.

Coach LeBlanc will be hired in May and will join the staff in Temple at the end of the current school year pending approval of the Temple ISD Board of Trustees.
