WACO, Texas — The fastest growing sport in the country has made its way to Central Texas: Pickleball!
A lot of factors are behind the popularity of pickleball, but it all goes back to one word: community.
"To find a good, fun, accessible game that all ages can partake in,” said David Brower, pastor at Central United Methodist Church in Waco. “I think pickleball was the right formula for people."
"You can play with your level of competition, and you have fun while moving," said Joleene Eiklenborg, a first-time player.
While fun, pickleball is not easy to master, and it does require training. However, you can still have a great time as you level up.
“Once you start progressing, you'll progress faster and faster," said Adam Osborne, an experienced player.
"It's like a giant ping pong table. Anyone can do it. It's very therapeutic,” said Van Davis, Awesome Pickleball outreach program coordinator at Central United Methodist Church.
Anyone looking to get started can join the free lessons taught by the church's Awesome Pickleball outreach program.
Central United Methodist has an open gym every Monday and Wednesday from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., and every Tuesday and Thursday from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.
The team offers hands-on training to anyone new to the sport, meaning you don’t have to come with any experience or equipment.
"If you're new to pickleball, we'll teach you how to play," said Davis.
"You gotta come out and try it. You're gonna like it. And you'll have fun then," said Eiklenborg.
If you are interested in checking why everyone loves pickleball so much, all you have to do is show up at 5740 Bagby Ave, Waco, TX 76712 during open gym times.
