WACO, Texas — Waco High School head football coach and athletic director Linden Heldt will step down at the end of the school year, Waco ISD confirmed to 6 News on Tuesday, Dec. 17.
Waco ISD said Heldt is stepping down to pursue opportunities closer to his family in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. Waco ISD said it will support Heldt as he seeks new opportunities.
“We are grateful for Coach Heldt’s dedication and leadership during his time at Waco High,” Waco ISD Superintendent Dr. Tiffany Spicer said. “While we are sad to see him go, we fully support his decision to prioritize family and wish him the very best in this next chapter.”
“It has been an honor to work with the student athletes, staff and families at Waco High,” Heldt said. “This decision was not an easy one, but my family’s needs must come first at this time. I am thankful for the relationships I’ve built here and look forward to seeing Waco High continue to grow and succeed. Lion Pride Runs Deep!”
Waco ISD said it will begin the process of identifying a new head football coach "to continue building upon the foundation Coach Heldt has established". The district will reportedly begin taking applications in early January.
According to the Waco ISD website, Heldt is in his 21st year coaching, and his fourth as head coach at Waco High School. He has previously coached at Canyon Creek, Putnam City West, Arlington High and most recently South Grand Prairie High School.
Waco ISD said Heldt has helped develop over 25 D1 athletes and 46 collegiate athletes in his career.
