TEMPLE, Texas — Central Texas Christian shutout Conroe Covenant Thursday night in a dominate 48-0 victory.
The Lions came into the game after they picked up their first loss of the season last Friday to Brazos Christian 29-12.
Head coach Leif Johnston said, "It was a full team win. Defense did what they were supposed to do offense. We were able to hit some explosive plays early and we talked about it with the guys this week, you know, last week is out of of their picture. We've got a lot of football left to play. So they understand that. It's a veteran group. So they did exactly what they're supposed to do tonight."
CTCS rebounding big time from the loss. They would start Thursday's game with a stalled offense until Ike Klimchuk punted the ball, the Cougars fumbled it and the Lions were able to recover and take over possession.
Quarterback Cooper Smith would then connect with Klimchuk in the endzone for the first touchdown of the night.
The explosive start would only continue from there for the Lions as four different players got into the endzone. Klimchuck with two touchdowns in the first half, Austin Evans, Princeton Schneider and Loyal Morris also got into the endzone early on.
The electric start to the offense a key part of the Lions win.
"We've got a lot of kids that can make plays all over the field," said coach. "A theme going in was just get the ball to the playmakers and our quarterback did a good job of getting the ball around spreading the love a little bit."
Central Texas Christian now improves to 7-1 on the season. They will host Hallettsville Sacred Heart next Friday at 7:30 p.m.
"It's a big deal, of course," said coach Johnston. "At the start of the year, we want to win a district championship, and then we want to win a state championship. And so in order to do that, you got to position yourself appropriately in, in district play. And so again, we're one step closer. We got a tough match up next week against Hallettsville. We'll start preparing tomorrow."
