Midway takes down Shoemaker 27-7 in 6 News' Game of the Week

The Panthers improve to 4-2 on the season behind an excellent defensive performance.

WACO, Texas — Midway got back in the win column following a 27-7 win over Shoemaker in 6 News' Game of the Week.

For the second week in a row, the Panthers were featured in the Game of the Week after a close 34-26 loss last week to Harker Heights. Shoemaker is also coming off a loss to Temple last week, as the pair of programs went into the game trying to get their first district win of the season.

Midway started the scoring early, Junior Tyler Seith put the Panthers up 7-0 after catching a dart from QB Cash Pullin. The next score wouldn't come until right before halftime when Midway RB Lathan Whisenton scored a rushing touchdown making it 13-0 Panthers at the half.

Midway Head Coach Joe Gillespie, formerly the Defensive Coordinator at TCU, a part of the coaching staff that made it to the National Championship in 2023, had his defense on full display tonight. The unit held Shoemaker scoreless until 2:58 left in third quarter.

Shoemaker got right back into the game after QB Tyrieke Wade carried the Grey Wolves with his legs on the team's opening drive in the second half. Wade had three big scramble plays, the last resulting in the team's first touchdown, making it a one score game heading into the fourth quarter.

Just when the Grey Wolves thought they were back in the game, Midway answered right back on the following drive. Whisenton picked up his second rushing touchdown of the night, putting the Panthers up 20-7.

All Shoemaker momentum was stopped after Midway picked off Wade on the Grey Wolves next offensive drive. Whisenton got his third rushing touchdown of the night and locked in the Panther victory.

After the win, Midway improves to 4-2 and will head up to Temple to face off with the Wildcats next week.

Shoemaker drops to 3-3 following the loss tonight and will look to get back on track against Killeen next week.
