RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil – Brittney Griner became the first Baylor Lady Bear to medal at the Olympic Games today, earning gold with the U.S. Women’s National Team. Team USA topped Spain in the final, 101-72, to finish 8-0.
Griner contributed four points and seven rebounds in the gold medal contest to become the 10th player to win an NCAA Championship (Baylor, 2012), WNBA title (Phoenix Mercury, 2014), World Championship (2014), and Olympic gold (2016).
The three-time consensus All-American at BU started all eight contests for Team USA. Griner averaged 9.8 points, 5.6 rebounds, and 1.4 blocks per game.
Griner swept all major national awards as a senior at Baylor, garnering Associated Press Player of the Year, Wade Trophy, Naismith Trophy, USBWA Player of the Year, and Wooden Award recognition. She completed her collegiate career with 3,283 points, 1,305 rebounds, 748 blocks, 18 dunks, and a .569 field goal percentage. In her tenure, the Lady Bears earned six Big 12 titles, four NCAA Tournament berths, two Final Four appearances, and one NCAA Championship.
