Killeen officials to host final community townhall ahead of total solar eclipse

The event will be held from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.

KILLEEN, Texas — Editor's Note: The attached video aired on March 2.

With just over one month left until the historic April 8 total solar eclipse makes its way through Central Texas, Killeen officials are ready to host the final community townhall prior to the event.

The townhall event will be held on Thursday from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. in ballrooms A and B at the Killeen Civic and Conference Center.

According to officials, safety is what is being prioritized. The city's population of 160,000 is expected to double over a four-day period and when the eclipse will enter its path of totality, which also has city officials urging residents to get together to participate in the "Celebrate Solar at Home" concept.

There are five points that officials want tourists and residents to be aware of, which include:

  • Traffic impact and how first responders may take longer to respond to emergency calls
  • Keeping enough gasoline on hand and in your cars
  • The idea of urging residents and tourists to go grocery shopping early during a busy holiday weekend
  • An increased load on cell networks and how internet speeds will likely be slowed during the eclipse
  • How businesses should prepare for the influx of customers

There will also be a number of events that day for tourists to enjoy throughout Central Texas. Click here to view a list we've put together of events going on throughout Central Texas.
